My Cloud®

A cloud in your own home, but how to access it? Western Digital's My Cloud app was designed with ease of use in mind.

In the 2010's, cloud storage was all the rage. However, many users did not trust the idea of their data being stored somewhere "out there". In stepped the My Cloud; a digital storage device for your home. My work was to design a simple, user friendly interface for the device's companion IOS app.

Working directly with the UX team, we defined our key user base through research and interviews. As the visual designer, I took UX decisions and defined a simple and streamlined interface to help our less technology inclined users understand the product and service.

My Role

As a UI designer, my work revolved around deep conversations with the UX research team and development of an uncomplicated interface and design system. I was also responsible for iconography and infographics. My primary tools were Balsamiq, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Persona Work

This project was a great opportunity for me to understand the development of unique personas within the UX process. We learned that the typical user of our product was the matriarch of a family, the curator of media from various digital devices. She was passionate about maintaining memories, but not necessarily up-to-date on the latest technologies that would allow her to save and retrieve that media.

Our mission was to create an interface and automatic system for backing up and accessing her media from any IOS device with the peace of mind that her data was safe at home in her My Cloud.
